SCHWEICHEL, R., 1999. Die Vegetation der Kanareninsel El Hierro, Anwendung von Fernerkundungsdaten (SPOT -2), (Online Publication), also available as CD-Rom, BIS-Verlag at Carl von Ossietzky Universität, Oldenburg, Germany.
The publication describes the achievement of a vegetation map of El Hierro, Canary Islands, Spain, based on digital data from SPOT 2. The first section presents physical features of the island applying well established methodology. In the second part dealing with digital data, various problems of image enhancement, georeferencing, building a digital elevation model, and merging topographic data are being discussed, followed by different ways of classifying digital imagery for land use / land cover classification using a raster based Geographic Information System. The results are compared to a conventionally designed vegetation map created only a few years earlier.
